Hope, trust His faithfulness

DAILY DEVOTIONAL – Sunday, May 20, 2012

Jeremiah saw one ray of hope in all the sin and sorrow surrounding him: “The unfailing love to the Lord never ends. . . .  Great is his faithfulness; his mercies begin afresh each day.”  God willingly responds with help when we ask.  Perhaps there is some sin in your life that you thought God would not forgive.  God’s steadfast love and mercy are greater than any sin, and he promises forgiveness.

Jeremiah knew from personal experience about God’s faithfulness.  God had promised that punishment would follow disobedience, and it did.  But God also had promised future restoration and blessing, and Jeremiah knew that God would keep that promise also.  Trusting in God’s faithfulness day by day makes us confident in his great promises for the future.

Lamentations 3:19-26 - The thought of my suffering and homelessness is bitter beyond words.  I will never forget this awful time, as I grieve over my loss.  Yet I still dare to hope when I remember this:

The unfailing love of the Lord never ends!  By his mercies we have been kept from complete destruction.  Great is his faithfulness; his mercies begin afresh each day.  I say to myself, “The Lord is my inheritance; therefore, I will hope in him!”

The Lord is wonderfully good to those who wait for him and seek him.  So it is good to wait quietly for salvation from the Lord.

I would also like to include this version of the Scripture:

Lamentations 3:25-26 - The Lord is good to those whose hope is in hi, to the one who seeks him; it is good to wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord.  (NIV)

Spiritual gifts beneficial

DAILY DEVOTIONAL – Saturday, May 19, 2012

You can read the Scripture for today, 1 Corinthians 13, by clicking on the link http://www.ahelpfulinspirationalblog.com/2012/01/17/love-faith-hope/.  1 Corinthians 13 defines love; and chapter 14 shows how love works.  Therefore, the Scripture for today is The Gifts of Tongues and Prophecy.  Prophecy may involve predicting future events, but its main purpose is to communicate God’s message to people, providing insight, warning, correction, and encouragement.  Speaking in tongues is a legitimate gift of the Holy Spirit, but the Corinthian believers were using it as a sign of spiritual superiority rather than as a means to spiritual unity.  Spiritual gifts are beneficial only when they are properly used to help everyone in the church.  We should not exercise them only to make ourselves feel good.

Paul makes several points about speaking in tongues: (1) It is a spiritual gift from God; (2) it is a desirable gift even though it isn’t a requirement of faith; (3) it is less important than prophecy and teaching.  Although Paul himself spoke in tongues, he stresses prophecy (preaching) because it benefits the whole church, while speaking in tongues primarily benefits the speaker.  Public worship must be understandable and edifying to the whole church.

There is a proper place for the intellect in Christianity.  In praying and singing, both the mind and the spirit are to be fully engaged.  When we sing, we should also think about the meaning of the words.  When we pour out our feelings to God in prayer, we should not turn off our capacity to think.  Pure Christianity is neither barren intellectualism nor thoughtless emotionalism.

Everything done in worship services must be beneficial to the worshipers.  This principle touches every aspect–singing, preaching, and the exercise of spiritual gifts.  Those contributing to the service (singers, speakers, readers) must have love as their chief motivation, speaking useful words or participating in a way that will strengthen the faith of other believers.

Worship is vital to the life of an individual and to the whole church.  Our church services should be conducted in an orderly way so that we can worship, be taught, and be prepared to serve God.  Those who are responsible for planning worship should make sure it has order and direction rather than chaos and confusion.  When there is chaos and disorder in the church, God cannot work, for he is not a God of confusion but of peace. (NLT)

1 Corinthians 14:1-5, 13-17, 26, 32-33, 36-40  - Let love be your highest goal, but also desire the special abilities the Spirit gives, especially the gift of prophecy.  For if your gift is the ability to speak in tongues, you will be talking to God but not to people, since they won’t be able to understand you.  You will be speaking by the power of the spirit, but it will all be mysterious.  But one who prophesies is helping others grow in the Lord, encouraging and comforting them.  A person who speaks in tongues is strengthened personally in the Lord, but one who speaks a word of prophecy strengthens the entire church.

I wish you all had the gift of speaking in tongues, but even more I wish you were all able to prophesy.  For prophecy is a greater and more useful gift than speaking in tongues, unless someone interprets what you are saying so that the whole church can get some good out of it.

So anyone who has the gift of speaking in tongues should pray also for the gift of interpretation in order to tell people plainly what has been said.  For if I pray in tongues, my spirit is praying, but I don’t understand what I am saying.

Well then, what shall I do?  I will do both.  I will pray in the spirit, and I will pray in words I understand.  I will sing in the spirit and I will sing in words I understand.  For if you praise God only in the spirit, how can those who don’t understand you praise God along with you?  How can they join you in giving thanks when they don’t understand what you are saying?  You will be giving thanks very nicely, no doubt, but it doesn’t help the other people present.

Well, my brothers and sisters, let’s summarize what I am saying.  When you meet, one will sing, another will teach, another will tell some special revelation God has given, one will speak in an unknown language, while another will interpret what is said.  But everything that is done must be useful to all and build them up in the Lord.

Remember that people who prophesy are in control of their spirit and can wait their turn.  For God is not a God of disorder but of peace, as in all the other churches.

Do you think that the knowledge of God’s word begins and ends with you Corinthians?  Well, you are mistaken!  If you claim to be a prophet or think you are very spiritual, you should recognize that what I am saying is a command from the Lord himself.  But if you do not recognize this, you will not be recognized.

So, dear brothers and sisters, be eager to prophesy, and don’t forbid speaking in tongues.  But be sure that everything is done properly and in order.

Believe, experience joy, fulfillment

DAILY DEVOTIONAL – Friday, May 18, 2012

To “believe” is more than intellectual agreement that Jesus is God.  Believe means to put our trust and confidence in him that he alone can save us.  It is to put Christ in charge of our present plans and eternal destiny.  Believing is both trusting his words as reliable, and relying on him for the power to change.  If you have never trusted Christ, let this promise of everlasting life be yours–and believe.

People often try to protect themselves from their fears by putting their faith in something they do or have: good deeds, skill or intelligence, money or possessions.  But only God can save us from the one thing that we really need to fear–eternal condemnation.  We believe in God by recognizing the insufficiency of our own efforts to find salvation and by asking him to do his work in us.  When Jesus talks about unbelievers, he means those who reject or ignore him completely, not those who have momentary doubts.

Many people don’t want their lives exposed to God’s light because they are afraid of what will be revealed.  They don’t want to be changed.  Don’t be surprised when these same people are threatened by your desire to obey God and do what is right, because they are afraid that the light in you may expose some of the darkness in their lives.  Rather than giving in to discouragement, keep praying that they will come to see how much better it is to live in light than in darkness. (NLT)

John 3:16-21 - [Jesus said] “For God so love the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.  God did not send his Son into the world to condemn it, but to save it.

“There is no judgment awaiting those who trust him.  But those who do not trust him have already been judged for not believing in the only Son of God.  Their judgment is based on this fact: The light from heaven came into the world, but they loved the darkness more than the light, for their actions were evil.  They hate the light because they want to sin in the darkness.  They stay away from the light for fear their sins will be exposed and they will be punished.  But those who do what is right come to the light gladly, so everyone can see that they are doing what God wants.”

Trust Christ’s power

DAILY DEVOTIONAL – Saturday, April 28, 2012

Some of the Jewish Christians who received this letter may have been on the verge of turning back from their promised rest in Christ, just as the people in Moses’ day had turned back from the Promised Land.  In both cases, the difficulties of the present moment overshadowed the reality of God’s promise, and the people doubted that God would fulfill his promises.  When we trust our own efforts instead of Christ’s power, we, too, are in danger of turning back.  Our own efforts are never adequate; only Christ can see us through.

The Israelites of Moses’ day illustrate a problem facing many who fill our churches today.  They know a great deal about Christ, but they do not know him personally–they don’t combine their knowledge with faith.  Let the Good News about Christ benefit your life.  Believe in him and then act on what you know.  Trust in Christ and do what he says.

God rested on the seventh day, not because he was tired, but to indicate the completion of creation.  Our Sabbath-rest in Christ begins when we trust him to complete his good and perfect work in us.

God had given the Israelites the opportunity to enter Canaan, but they disobeyed and failed to enter.  Now God offers us the opportunity to enter his ultimate place of rest–he invites us to come to Christ.  To enter his rest, you must believe that God has this relationship in mind for you; you must stop trying to create it; you must trust in Christ for it; and you must determine to obey him.  Today is the best time to find peace with God.  Tomorrow may be too late. (NLT)

Hebrews 4:1-10 - God’s promise of entering his place of rest still stands, so we ought to tremble with fear that some of you might fail to get there.  For this Good News–that God has prepared a place of rest–has been announced to us just as it was to them.  But it did them no good because they didn’t believe what God told them.  For only we who believe can enter his place of rest.  As for those who didn’t believe, God said, “In my anger I made a vow; ‘They will never enter my place of rest,’ ” even though his place of rest has been ready since he made the world.  We know it is ready because the Scriptures mention the seventh day, saying, “On the seventh day God rested from all his work.”  But in the other passage God said, “they will never enter my place of rest.”  So God’s rest is there for people to enter.  But those who formerly heard the Good News failed to enter because they disobeyed God.  So God set another time for entering his place of rest, and that time is today.  God announced this through David a long time later in the words already quoted: “Today you must listen to his voice.  Don’t harden your hearts against him.”  This new place of rest was not the land of Canaan, where Joshua led them.  If it had been, God would not have spoken later about another day of rest.  So there is a special rest still waiting for the people of God.  For all who enter into God’s rest will find rest from their labors, just as God rested after creating the world.

Good News for everyone

DAILY DEVOTIONAL – Friday,  April 27, 2012

Letters in Paul’s day frequently would begin with identifying the writer and the readers, followed by a greeting of peace.  Paul usually would add Christian elements to his greetings, reminding his readers of his call by God to spread the Good News, emphasizing that the authority for his words came from God, and giving thanks for God’s blessings.

Throughout this letter Paul combats a heresy similar to Gnosticism.  Gnostics believed that it took special knowledge to be accepted by God, for them, even for those who claimed to be Christians.  Christ alone was not the way of salvation.  In his introductory comments, therefore, Paul commended the Colossians for their trust (faith), love, and hope as they looked forward to heaven.  He deliberately omitted the word knowledge because of the “special knowledge” aspect of the heresy.  It is not what we know that brings salvation but whom we know.  Knowing Christ is knowing God.

When Paul says that we look forward to the joys of heaven, he is emphasizing the security of the believer.  Because we know that our future destination and salvation are sure, we are free to live for Christ and love others.  When you find yourself doubting or wavering in your faith or love, remember your destination–heaven.

Wherever Paul went, he preached the Good News–to Gentile audiences, to hostile Jewish leaders, and even to his Roman guards.  Whenever people believed in the message that Paul spoke, they were changed.  God’s Word is not just for our information, it is for our transformation!  Becoming a Christian means beginning a whole new relationship with God, not just turning over a new leaf or determined to do right.  New believers have a changed purpose, direction, attitude, and behavior.  They are no longer seeking to serve themselves, but they are bearing fruit for God.  How is the Good News reaching others through your life?

Because of their love for one another, Christians can have an impact that goes far beyond their neighborhoods and communities.  Christian love comes from the Holy Spirit.  The Bible speaks of it as an action and attitude, not just an emotion.  Love is a by-product of our new life in Christ.  Christians have no excuse for not loving, because Christian love is a decision to act in the best interests of others.

Paul lists five benefits God gives all believers through Christ: (1) He enabled us to share his inheritance; (2) he rescued us from Satan’s kingdom of darkness and made us his children; (3) he brought us into his eternal Kingdom; (4) he purchased our freedom from sin and judgment with his blood; and (5) he forgave all our sins.  Thank God for what you have received in Christ.

The Colossians feared the unseen forces of darkness, but Paul says that true believes have been transferred from darkness to light, from slavery to freedom, from guilt to forgiveness and from the power of Satan to the power of God.  We have been rescued from a rebel kingdom to serve the rightful King.  Our conduct should reflect our new allegiance. (NLT)

Colossians 1:1-14 - This letter is from Paul, chosen by God to be an apostle of Christ Jesus, and from our brother Timothy.  It is written to God’s holy people in the city of Colosse, who are faithful brothers and sisters in Christ.

May God our Father give you grace and peace.  We always pray for you, and we give thanks to God the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, for we have heard that you trust in Christ Jesus and that you love all of God’s people.  You do this because you are looking forward to the joys of heaven–as you have been ever since you first heard the truth of the Good News.  This same Good News that came to you is going out all over the world.  It is changing lives everywhere, just as it changed yours that very first day you heard and understood the truth about God’s great kindness to sinners.

Epaphras, our much loved co-worker, was the one who brought you the Good News.  He is Christ’s faithful servant, and he is helping us in your place.  He is the one who told us about the great love for others that the Holy Spirit has given you.

So we have continued praying for you ever since we first heard about you.  We ask God to give you a complete understanding of what he wants to do in your lives, and we ask him to make you wise with spiritual wisdom.  Then the way you live will always honor and please the Lord, and you will continually do good, kind things for others.  All the while, you will learn to know God better and better.

We also pray that you will be strengthened with his glorious power so that will have all the patience and endurance you need.  May you be filled with joy, always thanking the Father, who has enabled you to share the inheritance that belongs to God’s holy people, who live in the light.  For he has rescued us from the one who rules in the kingdom of darkness, and he has brought us into the Kingdom of his dear Son.  God has purchased our freedom with his blood and has forgiven all our sins.

Holy Spirit for guidance

DAILY DEVOTIONAL – Thursday, April 26, 2012

Only the Holy Spirit can give you a change of heart.

Jesus was soon going to leave the disciples, but he would remain with them.  How could this be?  The Counselor–the Spirit of God himself–would come after Jesus was gone to care for and guide the disciples.  The regenerating power of the Spirit came on the disciples just before Jesus’ ascension, and the Spirit was poured out on all the believers at Pentecost, shortly after Jesus ascended to heaven.  The Holy Spirit is the very presence of God within us and all believers, helping us live as God wants and building Christ’s church on earth.  By faith we can appropriate the Spirit’s power each day.  The word translated “Counselor” combines the ideas of comfort and counsel.  The Holy Spirit is a powerful person on our side, working for and with us.

The verses teach these truths about the Holy Spirit: He will never leave us; the world at large cannot receive him; he lives with us and in us; he teaches us; he reminds us of Jesus’ words; he convinces us of sin, shows us God’s righteousness, and announces God’s judgment on evil; he guides into truth and gives insight into future events; he brings glory to Christ.  The Holy Spirit has been active among people from the beginning of time, but after Pentecost he came to live in all believers.  Many people are unaware of the Holy Spirit’s activities, but to those who hear Christ’s words and understand the Spirit’s power, the Spirit gives a whole new way to look at life.

When Jesus said, “I will come to you,” he meant it.  Although Jesus ascended to heaven, he sent the Holy Spirit to live in believers, and to have the Holy Spirit is to have Jesus himself.

When we live by His [God's] standards, he will not leave us; he will come to us he will be in us, and he will show himself to us.  God knows what will happen, and because he will be with us through it all, we need not fear.  We don’t have to know the future to have faith in God; we have to have faith in God to be secure about the future.

Jesus promised the disciples that the Holy Spirit would help them remember what he had been teaching them.  This promise ensures the validity of the New Testament.  The disciples were eyewitnesses of Jesus’ life and teachings, and the Holy Spirit helped them remember without taking away their individual perspectives.  We can be confident that the Gospels are accurate records of what Jesus taught and did.  The Holy Spirit can help us in the same way.  As we study the Bible, we can trust him to plant truth in our mind, convince us of God’s will, and remind us when we stray from it.

The end result of the Holy Spirit’s work in our lives is deep and lasting peace.  Unlike worldly peace, which is usually defined as the absence of conflict, this peace is confident assurance in any circumstance; with Christ’s peace, we have no need to fear the present or the future.  If your life is full of stress, allow the Holy Spirit to fill you with Christ’s peace.

John 14:15-27 - [Jesus said] “If you love me, obey my commandments.  And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor, who will never leave you.  He is the Holy Spirit, who leads into all truth.  The world at large cannot receive him, because it isn’t looking for him and doesn’t recognize him.  But you do, because he lives with you now and later will be in you.  No, I will not abandon you as orphans–I will come to you.  In just a little while the world will not see me again, but you will.  For I will live again, and you will, too.  When I am raised to life again, you will know that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you.  Those who obey my commandments are the ones who love me.  And because they love me, my Father will love them, and I will love them.  And I will reveal myself to each one of them.”

Judas (not Judas Iscariot, but the other disciple with that name) said to him, “Lord, why are you going to reveal yourself only to us and not to the world at large?”

Jesus replied, “All those who love me will do what I say.  My Father will love them, and we will come to them and live with them.  Anyone who doesn’t love me will not do what I say.  And remember, my words are not my own.  This message is from the Father who sent me.  I am telling you these things now while I am still with you.  But when the Father sends the Counselor as my representative–and by the Counselor I mean the Holy Spirit–he will teach you everything and will remind you of everything I myself have told you.

I am leaving you with a gift–peace of mind and heart.  And the peace I give isn’t like the peace the world gives.  So don’t be troubled or afraid.”

Love, true obedience from the heart

DAILY DEVOTIONAL – Wednesday, April 25, 2012

Love is the key to following God’s laws.  A dear friend sent me these beautiful words of blessing on my birthday and I would like to share them with you.

“Go outside and let the beautiful world that our Lord created envelope you in His love.  Let the sun shine down on your face and the sweet smell of Spring enhance your senses.”

Scripture reading for today:

Some religious leaders tried to distinguish between major and minor laws, and some taught that all laws were equally binding and that it was dangerous to make any distinctions.  This teacher’s question could have provoked controversy among these groups, but Jesus’ answer summarized all of God’s laws.

God’s laws are not burdensome.  They can be reduced to two simple principles: Love God and love others.  These commands are from the Old Testament.  When you love God completely and care for others as you care for yourself, then you have fulfilled the intent of the Ten Commandments and the other Old Testament laws.  According to Jesus, these two commandments summarize all God’s laws.  Let them rule your thoughts, decisions, and actions.  When you are uncertain about what to do, ask yourself which course of action best demonstrates love for God and love for others.

This man had grasped the intent of God’s law as it is so often stressed in the Old Testament–that true obedience comes from the heart.  Because all the Old Testament commands lead to Christ, his next step was faith in Jesus himself.  This, however, was the most difficult step to take. (NLT)

Mark 12:28-34 – One of the teachers of religious law was standing there listening to the discussion.  He realized that Jesus had answered well, so he asked, “Of all the commandments, which is the most important?”

Jesus replied, “The most important commandment is this: ‘Hear, O Israel!  The Lord our God is the one and only Lord.  And you must love the Lord your God with all you heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all your strength.’  The second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’  No other commandment is greater than these.”

The teacher of religious law replied, “Well said, Teacher.  You have spoken the truth by saying that there is only one God and no other.  And I know it is important to love him with all my heart and all my understanding and all my strength, and to love my neighbors as myself.  This is more important than to offer all of the burnt offerings and sacrifices required in the law.”

Realizing this man’s understanding, Jesus said to him, “You are not far from the Kingdom of God.”  And after that, no one dared to ask him any more questions.

Comfort, encouragement found

DAILY DEVOTIONAL – Tuesday, April 24, 2012

Judah still had 100 years of trouble before Jerusalem would fail, then 70 years of exile.  So God tells Isaiah to speak tenderly and to comfort Jerusalem.  The seeds of comfort may take root in the soil of adversity.  When your life seems to be falling apart, ask God to comfort you.  You may not escape adversity, but you may find God’s comfort as you face it.  Sometimes, however, the only comfort we have is in the knowledge that someday we will be with God.  Appreciate the comfort and encouragement found in his Word, his presence, and his people.

Preparing a straight, smooth road means removing obstacles and rolling out the red carpet for the coming of the Lord.  The desert is a picture of life’s trials and sufferings.  We are not immune to these, but our faith need not be hindered by them.  Isaiah told people to prepare to see God work.  John the Baptist used these words as he challenged the people to prepare for the coming Messiah (Matthew 3:3). (NLT)

Isaiah 40:1-3 - “Comfort, comfort my people,” says your God.  “Speak tenderly to Jerusalem.  Tell her that her sad days are gone and that her sins are pardoned.  Yes, the Lord has punished her in full for all her sins.”

Listen!  I hear the voice of someone shouting, “Make a highway for the Lord through the wilderness.  Make a straight, smooth road through the desert for our God.  Fill the valleys and level the hills.  Straighten out the curves and smooth off the rough spots.  Then the glory of the Lord will be revealed, and all people will see it together.  The Lord has spoken!”

The second Scripture reading for today:

Almost 30 years had passed since the events of chapter 2.  Here John the Baptist burst onto the scene.  His theme was “Turn from your sins!”  The people needed to repent–make a 180-degree turn–from the kind of self-centeredness that leads to wrong actions, such as lying, cheating, stealing, gossiping, taking revenge, abusing, and indulging in sexual immorality.  A person who turns from sin stops rebelling and begins following Go’s way of living prescribed in his Word.  The first step in turning to God is to admit your sin, as John urged.  Then God will receive you and help you live the way he wants.  Remember that only God can get rid of sin.  He doesn’t expect us to clean up our life before we come to him.

Isaiah was one of the greatest prophets of the Old Testament and one of the most quoted in the New.  Like Isaiah, John was a prophet who urged the people to confess their sins and live for God.  Both prophets laugh that the message of repentance is good news to those who listen and seek the healing forgiveness of God’s love but terrible news to those who refuse to listen and thus cut off their only hope.

John the Baptist prepared the way for Jesus.  People who do not know Jesus need to get ready to meet him.  We can prepare them by explaining their need for forgiveness, demonstrating Christ’s teachings b y our conduct, and telling the how Christ can give their lives meaning.  We can “make a straight road for him” by connecting misconceptions that might be hindering people from coming to Christ.  Someone you know may be open to a relationship with Christ.  What can you do to prepare the way for this person? (NLT)

Matthew 3:1-3 - In those days John the Baptist began preaching in the Judean wilderness.  His message was, “Turn from your sins and turn to God, because the Kingdo of Heaven is near.”  Isaiah had spoken of John when he said, “He is a voice shouting in the wilderness.  Prepare a pathway for the Lofrd’s coming!  Make a straight road for him!’ “

Criticism, keep your conduct above it

DAILY DEVOTIONAL – Monday, April 23, 2012

You may not be able to keep people from speaking evil against you, but you can at least stop supplying them with ammunition.  As long as you do what is right, their accusations will be empty and only embarrass them.  Keep your conduct above criticism!  1 Peter 3:16 - But you must do this in a gentle and respectful way.  Keep your conscience clear.  Then if people speak evil against you, they will be ashamed when they see what a good life you live because you belong to Christ.

A forgiving spirit demonstrates that a person has received God’s forgiveness.  Jesus uses the picture of measuring grain in a basket to ensure the full amount.  If we are critical rather than compassionate, we will also receive criticism.  If we treat others generously graciously and compassionately, however; these qualities will come back to us in full measure.  We are to love others, not judge them.

Make sure you’re following the right teachers and leaders, because you will go no farther than they do.  Look for leaders who will show you more about faith and whose guidance you can trust.

Jesus doesn’t mean we should ignore wrongdoing, but we should not be so worried about others’ sins that we overlook our own.  We often rationalize our sins by pointing out the same mistakes in others.  What kinds of specks in others’ eyes are the easiest for you to criticize?  Remember your own “logs” when you feel like criticizing, and you may find that you have less to say.

We should not be so afraid of the label hypocrite that we stand still in our Christian life, hiding our faith and making no attempts to grow.  A person who tries to do right but often fails is not a hypocrite.  Neither are those who fulfill their duty even when they don’t feel like doing it.  It is often necessary and good to set aside our desires in order to do what needs doing.  It is not hypocrisy to be weak in faith.  A hypocrite is a person who puts on religious behavior in order to gain attention, approval, or admiration from others. (NLT)

Luke 6:37-42 - [Jesus said] “Stop judging others, and you will not be judged.  Stop criticizing others, or it will all come back on you.  If you forgive others, you will be forgiven.  If you give, you will receive.  Your gift will return to you in full measure, pressed down, shaken together to make room for more, and running over.  Whatever measure you use in giving–large or small–it will be used to measure what is given back to you.”

Then Jesus gave the following illustration: “What good is it for one blind person to lead another?  The first one will fall into a ditch and pull the other down also.  A student is not greater than the teacher.  But the student who works hard will become like the teacher.

“And why worry about a speck in your friend’s eye when you have a log in your own.  How can you think of saying, ‘Friend, let me help you get rid of that speck in your eye,’ when you can’t see past the log in your own eye?  Hypocrite!  First get rid of the log from your own eye; then perhaps you will see well enough to deal with the speck in your friend’s eye.

Believers produce much fruit

DAILY DEVOTIONAL – Sunday, April 22, 2012

Christ is the vine, and God is the gardener who cares for the branches to make them fruitful.  The branches are all those who claim to be followers of Christ.  The fruitful branches are true believers who by their living union with Christ produce much fruit.  But those who become unproductive–those who turn back from following Christ after making a superficial commitment–will be separated from the vine.  Unproductive followers are as good as dead and will be cut off and tossed aside.

Jesus makes a distinction between two kinds of pruning: (1) cutting off and (2) cutting back branches.  Fruitful branches are cut back to promote growth.  In other words, God must sometimes discipline us to strengthen our character and faith.  But branches that don’t bear fruit are cut off at the trunk not only because they are worthless but also because they often infect the rest of the tree.  People who don’t bear fruit for God or who try to block the efforts of God’s followers will be cut off from his life-giving power.

Remaining in Christ means (1) believing that he is God’s Son, (2) receiving him as Savior and Lord, (3) doing what God says, (4) continuing to believe the Good News, and (5) relating in love to the community of believers, Christ’s body.

Many people try to be good, honest people who do what is right.  But Jesus says that the only way to live a truly good life is to stay close to him, like a branch attached to the vine.   Apart from Christ our efforts are unfruitful.  Are you receiving the nourishment and life offered by Christ, the vine?  If not, you are missing a special gift he has for you.

When a vine produces “much fruit,” God is glorified, for daily he sent the sunshine and rain to make the crops grow, and constantly he nurtured each tiny plant and prepared it to blossom.  What a moment of glory for the Lord of the harvest when the harvest is brought into the barns, mature and ready for use!  He made it all happen!  This farming analogy shows how God is glorified when people come into a right relationship with him and begin to “produce much fruit” in their lives. (NLT)

John 15:1-8 – [Jesus said] “I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener.  He cuts off every branch that doesn’t produce fruit, and he prunes the branches that do bear fruit so they will produce even more.  You have already been pruned for greater fruitfulness by the message I have given you.  Remain in me, and I will remain in you.  For a branch cannot produce fruit if it is severed from the vine, and you cannot be fruitful apart form me.

“Yes, I am the vine; you are the branches.  Those who remain in me, and I in them, will produce much fruit.  For apart from me you can do nothing.  Anyone who parts from me is thrown away like a useless branch and withers.  Such branches are gathered into a pile to be burned.  But if you stay joined to me and my words remain in you, you may ask any request you like, and it will be granted.  My true disciples produce much fruit.   This brings great glory to my Father.”
